Ethical issues involved with the TV show "Luck" and the film "Blue Lagoon".

Luck

The show was based around horses and horse racing, something that many people are ok with while some disagree with because it is seen as animal cruelty. For this reason, there were ethical issues to deal with.

One of these issues was during the filming when a handler leading a horse back to its stall was involved in an incident in which the horse reared, fell back and hit her head. This injury is dangerous to horses because it usually results in traumatic brain injury, blindness and skull fractures. The public and PETA were not happy with this at all because of two other deaths from the previous season. Neither of these horses should have even been on the racetrack to begin with. This is because one of them was known to have a history of arthritis and was euthanised after suffering a compound leg fracture, while the other horse was on a constant diet of painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs, suffering multiple fractures of the right front leg.

The blame went straight to the American Humane Association who where on set for filming but apparently allowed it to continue despite the health of the horses. Changes were then made to the messages at the end of the episodes. Instead of saying that no horses had been harmed, they stated that animals had been monitored. According to PETA, the retired racehorses were subjected to undue physical and mental stress by the sudden reentrance into the world they had been retired from for a reason.

Furthermore, the director of the California Horse Racing Board issued a statement, supporting the death of the horse, stating that these kind of things are not uncommon, and that it happens more than people know. Luckily, HBO then cancelled the show.

Blue Lagoon

The director of the film described the film by saying it is an "R-rated film I hope parents take their kids to see". The problem with the film is that it had a thematic sexual awakening to it, which starred a 15 year old girl (Brooke shields) who had just finished her controversial role as a 12 year old prostitute in the film "Pretty baby". She had a body double for the nudity scenes, but the controversy and disagreement with it all was still there.

Lots of people called it nothing short of child pornography and the attempts that both directors and the girls mother tried to make it less the film less creepy failed greatly. Teri shields, camped out in a bungalow on the island during the shoot and said that she was more than eager and approving when it came to ensuring that the two stars got off together, inviting 19 year old Christopher Atkins to sleep in her tent.

Atkins himself remembers the director's (Randal Kleiser) attempts to ensure chemistry even before the young actors had actually met, by giving him a picture of the then 14 year old girl so he could tape it above his bunk and look at her before going to sleep every night.
